The term strategy originates from the ancient Greek word “strategos”, meaning “general”—the military leader responsible for planning and directing troops in the field. It was an ongoing campaign.
In business, we have made it a one-time exercise, often done by select experts or, worse, handed to us by a consulting firm.
You certainly need experts and outside perspectives, but you also need strategists who are working across the organization, continuously executing, reviewing, and refining your strategy.
