CTO’s role vary in scope depending on the industry and organization size. In a typical Gartner personification, we see the CTO’s role in primary industry businesses in four personas:
· Digital Business Leader — Accountable for the digital business technology strategy and building and architecting the required digital platforms.
· Business Enabler — Accountable for optimizing technology to support the current business operations and business model.
· IT Innovator — Accountable for leading technology innovation and transformation in IT.
· COO of IT — Accountable for running daily IT operations to support the current business model.
In my experience with technology democratization and fusion (business + IT) teams, I see that the CTO’s role will primarily focus on being a Digital Business leader and, more importantly, an IT innovator.
As an IT innovator, CTOs provide leadership in architecture, manage innovations, and are responsible for trend-spotting in their respective industry.
Happy to understand what other fellow CTOs and technology leaders think and share which persona is more expected out of them?
