VUCA and Future-fit Organizations

The U.S. Army War College coined the term VUCA in 1987 to describe or to reflect on the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of the post-Cold War world.

The world today is much more VUCA than it was in 1987 and organizations need to be proactive in moving from an ad hoc approach to trendspotting and evaluating emerging technology to become future-fit.

Future-fit organizations don’t just need a strategic approach to deal with VUCA but also their leaders to have a new state of mind.

A new state of mind where their leaders are future-fit thinkers; who have the ability to think in an unconstrained, unconventional and innovative ways. Not only they can challenge conventional wisdom but explore plausible what-if futures together and with their teams.
