Given the pace of change that Gen AI has brought to organizations’ AI initiatives, questions are being raised whether there is a need to have a C-level role such as Chief AI officer (CAIO).
My view is that AI has a broad impact across the organization, and several stakeholders should collectively own this area:
- CTO – For choosing the right frameworks, toolset, reference architecture, talent & skills
- CDO (if not part of CTO organization) – Data governance, AI ready data
- CISO – AI ready security
- Legal – Privacy and Ethical use
- CIO – Managing AI assets in the organization
AI & Gen AI have the far reaching impact and requires a holistic and integrated approach, but in the end this is still a business-led technology heavy initiative.
Given the importance and focus this technology need; a Head of AI (part of CTO organization) might be a good idea. This role could be accountable for all AI initiatives for the organization and work with business and other IT stakeholders.
