Important Architecture Tool – Communication Plan

TOGAF defines the purpose of a comunication plan as
“Enterprise architectures contain large volumes of complex and inter-dependent
information. Effective communication of targeted information to the right stakeholders at the right time is a critical success factor for enterprise architecture. Development of a Communications Plan for architecture allows for this communication to be carried out within a planned and managed process.”

Well to extend the purpose of communication plan or simply the communication into any Architecture work, you need to let people know that the architecture exists. That’s when the open sharing tools such as wikis or Sharepoint come into play. The information hidden in the word documents doesn’t help here.
Though TOGAF defines most of the communication work or defining communication plan is the initial early phase for enterprise architecture but communication plan should be considered as the start point of engagement with stakeholders rather an activity completed in the early phase.

Real architecture is where the architecture is “real-ised” and that is always through people. Architecture is a dialogue so keep the conversation/communication alive.
