TOGAF describes the role of Enterprise Architecture is to define the ‘Target State’ aka
‘Future State’ of an organisation.
But If I reflect my experience on different facets of architecture work I have hardly seen fixed future state at enterprise level. Everything in the enterprise is changing related to everything else and by the time we reach to that so called future state it is out of date.
We could have this absolute ‘As-IS’ and ‘To-Be’ in the context of a given business change but unless it is an architecture led enterprise transformation scope, its hardly the case.
However TOGAF suggests to customize it as per your needs, take a step to tailor the ADM phases as per your requirements rather than getting overwhelmed by the details.
