Enterprise Architecture as function has been closely associated with IT. But businesses are now realising that in order to make a full use of this function it shouldn’t be just limited to IT.
In order to understand this further let’s understand what is an enterprise.
An enterprise is an entity to achieve an objective be it commercial or charitable or both.
Does an enterprise always have an enterprise architecture? Yes it does.
Every enterprise defines how it does business or for that matter charity i.e. it’s operating model and defines a foundation for execution i.e. it’s enterprise architecture.
Hence enterprise architecture doesn’t only mean to define IT infrastructure and services but also about people, process, purpose and platforms.
In a true sense its about ‘architecting the enterprise’.
